2015 Princeton Review ‘The Best 379 Colleges'

BURLINGTON, VT (08/06/2014)(readMedia)-- Champlain College continues to be one of the country's best institutions for undergraduate education, according to 2015 edition of Princeton Review's annual college guide, "The Best 379 Colleges."

Champlain College President Donald J. Laackman said, "Champlain College endeavors to be a leader in educating today's students to become skilled practitioners, effective professionals and engaged global citizens. Preparing students for the working world is at the heart of what we do and this recognition only reinforces our commitment to that goal," Laackman said.

Only about 15 percent of America's 2,500 four-year colleges and only four colleges outside the United States are profiled in the annual Princeton Review college guide. In a Princeton Review press release, author Robert Franek said "the guide's purpose isn't to crown one college 'best', but to offer applicants a snapshot into the community with everything from social life to financial aid to academics."

"Every college in our book offers outstanding academics," Franek said. "These 379 colleges differ significantly in their program offerings, campus culture, locales, and cost. We present our 62 ranking lists to give applicants the broader base of campus feedback to choose the college that's best for them."

The schools in "The Best 379 Colleges" (Random House / Princeton Review, $23.99) also have rating scores in eight categories based on institutional data it collected during the 2013-14 academic year and/or its student survey for the book. The ratings are scores on a scale of 60 to 99 and they appear in each school profile. Among the Champlain profile rankings are scores of 96 for quality of life, 93 for Green rating, and 83 for Academics.

"We are very pleased that The Princeton Review continues to include Champlain College as one of the top colleges in the nation," noted Catherine O'Rourke, vice president of Enrollment Management at Champlain. "Champlain is all about helping students find their academic and career passions and developing them to their highest potential and this recognizes that ongoing effort. Preparing students for the opportunities and challenges of an increasingly competitive world is not negotiable for us. When a student graduates from Champlain College, they can be confident that they are not only career-ready, but also life-ready," she said.

That readiness is reflected in the most recent Career Outcomes Report compiled by the Champlain Career Services office showing that one year after graduation, the Class of 2013 has an employment rate of 93 percent, up 3 percent from the Class of 2012. Overall, 90 percent of graduates reported they are in jobs related to their career goals, 80 percent found their jobs within six months of graduation, and 40 percent worked for their current employer before graduation through internships, part-time jobs or field experience.

The Princeton Review praised Champlain College it for its "Excellent professors, innovative classes and an inviting small-classroom environment," and quotes Champlain students who said, "...as a whole, students are noticeably goal oriented... very interactive, conversational and friendly... (and) serious about doing big things and going far in life."

Other students surveyed noted that "...professors nurture an innovative and interactive classroom with hands-on experience and an integration of personalized education and real world problem solving,,, and Champlain wants to make sure you're doing what you love and that you can continue doing what you love long after you graduate."

Burlington was described as an "amazing college town"... packed with students from other universities and colleges and that "student activities are always available such as skiing or boarding, biking, hiking, movies, plays, clubs and bars." Champlain ranked 19th for "Best College Dorms" and "College City Gets High Marks," in the 62 ranking lists of top 20 colleges in various categories. The Princeton Review does not rank the colleges academically or from 1 to 379 in any category.

Champlain College is also included in The Princeton Review's "Guide to 322 Green Colleges," released last April, which profiles 320 institutions of higher education in the United States and two in Canada that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability in their academic offerings, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation.
