BURLINGTON, VT (09/03/2010)(readMedia)-- The Division of Information Technology & Sciences (ITS) at Champlain College will again offer a computer programming course for middle school students this fall. The course, "Alice Programming" begins Sept. 30 and will run for six weeks through Nov. 4 on Thursdays from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m.
The College invites middle school teachers/administrators to nominate two students (one boy and one girl) from their schools. Students should not contact Champlain College directly to register. There is no tuition charged and no course credit or grades will be given.
"The Division of Information Technology & Sciences hopes that middle schools will take advantage of this opportunity and participate in this program," said Ali Rafieymehr, dean of the division.
Schools that are interested should respond by email to rafieymehr@champlain.edu no later than Sept. 24. A place will be held for each school as soon as a commitment via email arrives. The class is limited to 20 students, however, if needed, a waiting list will be created to help accommodate more schools, Rafieymehr said.
"Schools are encouraged to nominate students who are eager to learn more about computers. One of the goals of this course is to spark interest in computer technology among middle school students, in particular among female students. Therefore, schools should nominate an equal number of boys and girls," he explained.
Champlain's Division of ITS offers a wide range of areas of study and majors including, computer and digital forensics, computer information technology, computer networking and information security, computer science and innovation, game programming, radiography and web development and design.
Champlain College is ranked in the top tier of Best Regional Colleges in the North by 2011 America's Best Colleges and is a recognized leader in educating students to become skilled practitioners, effective professionals and global citizens.
