Charles Holden Earns Promotion from St. Mary's College of Maryland
St. Mary's College of Maryland announces that Charles Holden, formerly of Scranton, Iowa, has been promoted to full professor effective August 1, 2011. Holden joined the faculty at St. Mary's in 1999. He has a Ph.D. in history from The Pennsylvania State University. His teaching and research interests include the late 19th- and 20th-century U.S. history and Southern history. He has written two books: In the Great Maelstrom: Conservatives in Post-Civil War South Carolina (2002) and The New Southern University: Academic Freedom and Liberalism at UNC, 1920-1941 (University Press of Kentucky, forthcoming).
St. Mary's College of Maryland, designated the Maryland state honors college in 1992, is ranked one of the best public liberal arts schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. More than 2,000 students attend the college, nestled on the St. Mary's River in Southern Maryland.
