Chickens Fly in Iowa State Fair Throwing Contest

DES MOINES, IA (08/18/2017) (readMedia)-- Knoxville resident Heidi Smith, 42, won the first place title in the 16 to 50 age group of the Ladies' Rubber Chicken Throwing contest held Wednesday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair. Smith launched her chicken 60-feet in the contest.

Second place in the Ages 16 to 50 division went to Marissa Sharp, 22, of Oskaloosa, and Laura Hand, 34, of Des Moines, both threw 57-feet. Pammie Aldrich, 31, of Huxley received third place for her throw of 55-feet.

In the Ages 51 and Over division, Beaky Reber McAfee, 59, of Avondale, Az. received first place for her 60-foot throw.

La Rae Knapmann, 52, of Delhi, won second place with a 49-foot throw. Jan Pettit, 52, of Afton received third place for her 47-foot throw.

More than 95 Fairgoers participated in the popular event.

The contest was part of "Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions" in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. A first prize of $5 and ribbons were awarded to each class.
