Chickens Fly in Iowa State Fair Throwing Contest

DES MOINES, IA (08/19/2018) (readMedia)-- Knoxville resident Heidi Smith, 43, won the first place title in the 16 to 50 age group of the Ladies' Rubber Chicken Throwing contest held Wednesday at the 2018 Iowa State Fair. Smith launched her chicken 58-feet in the contest.

Second place in the Ages 16 to 50 division went to Marissa Sharp, 23, of Oskaloosa with a throw of 53 feet. Joanne Olson, 48, of Ames threw 51-feet.

In the Ages 51 and Over division, Darlene Sellers, 60, of Davis City received first place for her 54-foot throw.

Michelle Gooch, 51, of Des Moines, won second place with a 50-foot throw. There was a time for third place with 49 feet with Vicki Morris, 67, of New Virginia and Cheryl Buck of Des Moines.

More than 120 Fairgoers participated in the popular event.

The contest was part of "Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions" in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. A first prize of $5 and ribbons were awarded to each class.
