Church Cookbook Classics Win State Fair Awards

DES MOINES, IA (08/16/2022) (readMedia)-- Potatoes were the featured ingredient in the Our Iowa Church Cookbook Favorites competition judged Saturday, August 13, at the 2022 Iowa State Fair.

Contestants were challenged to create an award winning recipe from an Iowa church cookbook that features potatoes.

Linda Torgerson of Radcliffe won first place and $400 for the kitchen fund of the church from which the recipe came.

Louise Piper of Garner earned second place and $200 to the recipe's church of origin. Michelle Henderson of Ankeny claimed third place and $100 to the recipe's church of origin.

Entries were judged on taste, appearance, creativity and recipe origin narrative.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 128 divisions, 615 classes and nearly 6,300 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Urban Air Adventure Park.
