Claire Giblin's "Shroud"

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (11/10/2011)(readMedia)-- Layer after layer of paint puts artist Claire Giblin in a "meditative state" and frees her mind to "concentrate on a poetry of color." The acrylic artist exhibits her work at Elizabethtown College through Friday, Dec. 16. The College's Department of Fine and Performing Arts, Fine Arts Division, hosts "Claire Giblin, Paintings," with an opening reception at 5 p.m. Friday Nov. 11, in Hess Gallery in Zug Memorial Hall.

Originally from New York City, Giblin studied fine art and art history at F.I.T., Lebanon Valley College, Millersville University and Franklin & Marshall College. Currently she is working toward a Certificate in Fine Art Appraisal at New York University.

Giblin is a recent recipient of national and regional awards in art, and is listed in "Who's Who is the Arts," "Who's Who is America," and "Who's Who of American Women." In 2003, she was honored by the Women's Center at Franklin & Marshall College as "Woman of the Year."

"I paint with thinned layers of small amounts of pigment suspended in acrylic mediums," she said, "building up and glazing the canvas with color that seems to float and elude." She said applying the acrylic paint as though "it were pure liquid atmosphere allows me to experience a meditative state. This frees my mind to concentrate on a poetry of color-an intuitive process with very gratifying results."

Giblin has participated in art shows around the world. She also has served as juror and panelist for the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts, among other organizations. Giblin's work can be found in corporate settings, museums and private collections internationally.

She is curator of exhibitions at the Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., where she has taught classes in introductory painting and workshops in professional practices. She also leads a weekly life-drawing studio.

"Claire Giblin: Paintings" is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 16.
