ALBANY, NY (01/28/2011)(readMedia)-- The New York State Bar Association announced today that Claire P. Gutekunst of New York (Proskauer Rose LLP) has been named treasurer of the 77,000-member organization. Gutekunst was elected at the 134th Annual Meeting by the House of Delegates, the Association's decision and policy-making body. She will begin her term on June 1, 2011.

A resident of Manhattan who grew up in the Glens Falls area, Gutekunst received her undergraduate and master's degrees from Brown University and her law degree from the Yale Law School.

Gutekunst is a partner at Proskauer Rose LLP, in its Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department. For more than 25 years, she has been an advocate for corporate, law firm and individual clients in resolving complex commercial disputes. She practices in the state and federal courts, in domestic and international arbitrations and as an advocate or mediator in mediations.

Active in the State Bar for 23 years, Gutekunst serves as vice-president of the first judicial district of the State Bar's Executive Committee and chairs the Membership Committee. She co-chairs the Special Committee on Rules for Consideration of Reports. She previously chaired the Committee on Women in the Law and the Strategic Planning Advisory Committee. She is a member of the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section's Executive Committee and the Committee on Diversity. She also is a Maryann Saccomando Freedman Fellow of The New York Bar Foundation.

Gutekunst is a frequent speaker and author on issues relating to trial practice and alternative dispute resolution. She is a member of the Executive Committee and the National Task Force on Diversity in ADR of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR). From 1997 to 2006, Gutekunst served on both the New York State Judicial Screening Committee and the First Department Judicial Screening Committee. She also chairs the Advisory Council of the YWCA-NYC's Academy of Women Leaders.

The 77,000-member New York State Bar Association is the official statewide organization of lawyers in New York and the largest voluntary state bar association in the nation. Founded in 1876, the State Bar's programs and activities have continuously served the public and improved the justice system for 135 years.
