ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (10/24/2014)(readMedia)-- Dr. Jennifer Francis, a research professor at the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences--Rutgers University, studies one of the most controversial topics of our global experience -- global warming and the effects of temperature change. She comes to Bowers Writers House at Elizabethtown College at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, to discuss her scientific and personal perspectives on the subject.

As part of "Truth and Fact: Global Climate and Temperature," Francis offers a unique insight into the modern world of climate and temperature, especially the slowing of the jet stream and its effects on current weather patterns.

Her interest in weather and climate change in the Arctic began when she and her husband circumnavigated the world in a sailboat, including Cape Horn and the Arctic, from 1980-1985. She has published more than 40 scientific papers on the topic of climate change.

Francis earned a bachelor's degree in meteorology at San Jose State University in 1988 and a doctoral degree in atmospheric sciences from the University of Washington in 1994. As a professor at Rutgers University since the mid-90s, she has taught courses in satellite remote sensing and climate-change issues; she also cofounded and codirected the Rutgers Climate and Environmental Change Initiative. Presently she is a research professor with the Rutgers Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences and studies Arctic climate change and Arctic-global climate linkages.
