Coker College Senior Seth Johnson Receives Departmental Award

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (04/17/2012)(readMedia)-- The Coker College Department of Communication, Language and Literature is proud to congratulate Seth Johnson as the recipient of the 2012 Departmental Award. Each year, the department faculty select an outstanding graduating senior to receive this recognition. Johnson is a communication and art double major from Hartsville, S.C.

Johnson, who has particular interests in filmmaking and cinema studies, received the Write On! Award during his sophomore year for an essay he wrote on the movie The Spook Who Sat by the Door as part of a course on filmmakers. He also completed an internship with Media Source 1 in Florence, S.C.

The faculty were particularly impressed by his recent contribution to the College's spring performance of Richard Strauss's Enoch Arden, performed Assistant Professor of Music Jun Matsuo, piano, and Associate Professor of Music Graham Wood, narrator.  The piece is a reading with music of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's narrative poem, for which Johnson created accompanying video imagery.  The nearly hour-long work provided for a visual interpretation of the themes of the work, presented on a six-frame grid, to accompany the live performers.  The work was completed last fall as an independent study class with Professor of Communication George Lellis.
