Coker College Student Katelyn Miller Selected for Santee Cooper Environmental Internship Program

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (04/10/2012)(readMedia)-- Coker College student Katelyn Miller, of Andrews, S.C., was recently selected to participate in the Santee Cooper Environmental Internship Program this summer. Each summer, only 11 college students are selected to participate in the program, one from each congressional district and five from the state at large. Miller is a junior chemistry major at Coker.

"Katelyn has already gained valuable research experience at Coker College," said Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. Gordon Brown. "Due to her proven track record as a student who understands the fundamentals of chemistry and learns new techniques quickly, I'm sure she will do very well in this program."

The Santee Cooper Environmental Internship Program provides a summer education-in-the-workplace opportunity designed to give interns an in-depth understanding of the many traditional and renewable resources used to make electricity, the importance of balancing environmental issues with meeting electricity demands and how that electricity is transmitted and ultimately distributed to homes and businesses. Interns also learn about Santee Cooper's key role in the environmental and economic well-being of South Carolina. The program concentrates on the challenges of keeping the lights on while protecting the state's environmental and economic prosperity.

Established in 1908, Coker College readies undergraduates for personal and professional success through a distinctive four-year program that emphasizes a practical application of the liberal arts as well as hands-on and discussion-based learning within and beyond the classroom. Coker is ranked among the "Best Colleges" in the South by U.S. News & World Report as well as The Princeton Review. Located in Hartsville, S.C., Coker is within two hours of the cultural, financial and recreational resources of Charlotte, Columbia, Charleston and Myrtle Beach.
