HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/10/2011)(readMedia)-- On May 8, at commencement ceremonies marking the end of the 236th academic year at Hampden-Sydney College, Colin William O'Neill, Class of 2011, received the Gammon Cup. This award was presented by Dr. Robert T. Herdegen III, Dean of the Faculty at Hampden-Sydney College. The Gammon Cup, given in memory of Dr. Edgar G. Gammon, a Hampden-Sydney graduate of the Class of 1905, pastor of College Church from 1917 to 1923, and President of the College from 1939 to1955, is awarded to the member of the graduating class who has best served the College through character, scholarship, and athletic ability.

O'Neill, a Patrick Henry Scholar, was Captain and played forward on the varsity basketball team. He is a member of the honorary societies Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership) and Omicron Delta Epsilon (economics). He served as an Admissions Office tour guide (Garnet & Grey Society), as a Resident Advisor, as Vice President of the Student Investment Group, and as a member of the President's Men. He was recognized as a student leader in the 2011 edition of Who's Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges. A mathematical economics major, Colin is a graduate of Leavenworth Senior High School in Leavenworth, KS, and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Mark E. O'Neill of Lorton, VA.
