MORRISTOWN, NJ (10/29/2010)(readMedia)-- College of Saint Elizabeth (CSE) student Rael Otieno, '11, of Stroudsburg, Pa., was awarded one of two Barry Gillman Humanitarian Scholarships by the Independent College Fund in recognition of her community service and academic achievement.

The second scholarship was also awarded to a CSE student, Natali Exposito, '12, of Stroudsburg, Pa.

The Barry Gillman Humanitarian Scholarship was created in 2009 through the generosity of the PNC Foundation in memory of a respected and beloved PNC colleague, Barry Gillman. The Scholarship honors the compassion and spirit of volunteerism by encouraging undergraduate students to continue in their humanitarian work while attending college. Two awards of $5,000 each will be made to qualified students each academic year.

Otieno volunteers to provide care and support for AIDS victims and orphans in Africa. She also helps conduct a kickboxing program called "Teens against Violence" in her neighborhood to promote a positive lifestyle. In the past, she supported sports for the Mentally Handicapped through the Girls Scouts. "I was totally in shock when I received the letter," said Otieno. "I am a small person and somebody somewhere saw the light in me and my desire to work for a human cause. This award gives me a renewed strength to go on giving to others."
