ALBANY, NY (07/12/2013)(readMedia)-- Richard S. Cleary, Jr., a second-year law student at Columbia Law School, has been awarded the 2013 Honorable Charles L. Brieant, Jr. Fellowship, The New York Bar Foundation has announced.

As the recipient of the $5,000 fellowship, Cleary is working this summer under the supervision of the Hon. Loretta A. Preska, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. He is researching and writing about issues facing the court as a whole.

"The Foundation is pleased to recognize Richard Cleary with the Charles L. Brieant, Jr. Fellowship. He is an accomplished young man with a bright future ahead of him," said Bar Foundation President Cristine Cioffi (Cioffi Slezak Wildgrube). "We expect that this fellowship will be the first of his many career accomplishments."

A Louisville native, Cleary graduated summa cum laude from Washington and Lee University and earned a master's degree from Trinity College of the University of Cambridge. He was recently named a James Kent Scholar at Columbia Law School, where he is co-president of the Federalist Society. He expects to graduate in May 2015.

Prior to attending law school, Cleary was a research assistant at the American Enterprise Institute and worked at the office of U.S. Senator Richard G. Lugar.

"It is an honor to have been selected as the Brieant fellow. I am grateful for the financial contribution to my legal education," said Cleary. "The opportunity to intern for Chief Judge Preska in this capacity is particularly meaningful."
