Common Cause/NY Statement on Campaign for One NY Campaign Finance Board Decision

NEW YORK, NY (07/06/2016)(readMedia)-- Common Cause/NY Executive Director Susan Lerner released the following statement in response to today's New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB) decision on the Campaign for One New York. Common Cause/NY requested the CFB examine the fundraising practices of the Campaign for One New York in February.

"It is disappointing that the Campaign for One New York was able to raise massive amounts of dark money without suffering any penalty," Common Cause/NY Executive Director Susan Lerner said. "It is, however, gratifying that the CFB did make clear that politically linked 501c(4) organizations such as the Campaign for One New York must be held to stricter standards in order to ensure that dark money is not influencing government and out elections. We are glad that the CFB now joins Common Cause/NY in support of stronger laws to prevent this kind of behavior in the future. The City Council should immediately take up legislation to strictly limit fund-raising for organizations tied to elected officials such as the Campaign for One New York."
