Community Invited to "A Day at SUNY Delhi"

DELHI, NY (02/28/2013)(readMedia)-- SUNY Delhi is offering a full day of free workshops, classes and events Saturday, March 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on campus as a thank you to the community.

"SUNY Delhi owes its existence to dedicated community leaders who worked tirelessly for many years to convince state leaders of the need for a college in Delhi," said President Candace S. Vancko. "A Day at SUNY Delhi is an opportunity to celebrate our heritage, say thanks to the community and showcase all that makes SUNY Delhi great."

The day will kick off with a "meet and greet" coffee 9 a.m.-10 a.m. in MacDonald Hall. Those who register in advance will receive a complimentary noon lunch hosted by the College Association at Delhi, Inc. The schedule is as follows:

Alternative Energy Demonstration, 10 a.m. - 12 noon, Electrical Technologies Center by Jim Ellis, Instructor - Applied Sciences and Building Technologies

CADD 3D Designs and Printing, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Smith Hall, Rooms 106-107 by Delhi's American Design Drafting Association Student Club -- Students will assist participants in developing their own 3D design on the CADD computers. The 3D printer will also print a demo project to show how this technology is used to create prototypes. Participants can spend as little or as much time as they want.

Architectural Model Building, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Farnsworth Architectural Studio by Delhi's Architectural Club -- See how architectural models are created by using the latest in CADD, laser cutters and plotters.

So You Think You Can Search, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m., Bush Hall, Room 226 by Luis Pelegrin, Information Technology major -- Participants will learn how to use Google to efficiently search for topics of interest. Participants are encouraged to bring a topic to search.

Saving Money Every Day, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m., Bush Hall, Room 302 by Shannon Shoemaker, Assistant Professor - Business -- Participants will discover how to cut grocery bills without becoming an "extreme couponer."

Basic Meditation Exercise, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m., Farrell Center Dance Studio by Dr. Akira Odani, Associate Professor - Business -- This workshop will be a practice of basic meditative exercises that participants can start on their own, followed by some discussion of the subject. Comfortable clothes are recommended.

Sculpt Away!, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m., 11 a.m. – 12 noon, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m., and 2 p.m. – 3 p.m., Baking Lab, MacDonald Hall by Chef Julee Miller, Assistant Professor - Hospitality Management and Sculpting Students -- Delhi students will show how to make family-friendly, non-toxic, self-hardening salt dough for modeling anything from volcanos to Christmas ornaments. Participants will leave with a completed project and a recipe using common household ingredients.

The 5-2-1-0 campaign for Healthy Communities: How Can We Make it Work?,10 a.m. – 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., MacDonald Hall by Betsy Weidenbach, Associate Professor - Hospitality Management and Nutrition Students -- In the college's state-of-the-art culinary facilities, participants will prepare healthy recipes that can help families achieve the goals of a healthy lifestyle. Working primarily with vegetables and fruits, participants will learn how to incorporate five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. The 5-2-1-0 goals will also be discussed. Limited to 10 participants.

Social Networks, 11 a.m. – 12 noon, Bush Hall, Room 226 by Kim MacLeod, Director of Communications and New Media -- Join the social media generation and learn how to participate on Facebook, Twitter and other sites. Delhi's New Media Director will get participants started with the basics.

Microsoft Word, 11 a.m. – 12 noon, Bush Hall, Room 302 by Shannon Shoemaker, Assistant Professor - Business -- Participants will learn how to use Microsoft® Word 2010 to create a flyer and write a letter. After completing this workshop, participants will be able to produce documents that are easy to understand and visually compelling.

Fun Kids Crafts, 11 a.m. – 12 noon and 1 p.m. – 2 p.m., Location TBA by Lisa Tessier, Assistant Professor - Liberal Arts and Sciences -- Children of all ages are welcome to attend and make crafts. Participants will create Leprechaun traps (just in time for St. Patrick's Day), magic wands, and more. A "free-time" art station will also be provided for drawing and stenciling. Participants should wear an old shirt so that painting and gluing will not be a concern.

Zumba and Dance Infusion, 11 a.m. – 12 noon, Farrell Center Dance Studio by Raegan Reed, Adjunct Instructor – Applied Sciences and Building Technologies -- Participants will learn mini dance routines that will make the dancer inside shine. This class incorporates many different styles of dance, including Hip-hop, Salsa, African, Merengue and more.

Introduction to the Golf Swing for Adults, 11 a.m. – 12 noon, The Bubble, Clark Field House by SUNY Delhi Professional Golf Management Students -- Participants will learn the fundamentals of a golf swing from students enrolled in the Professional Golf Management program. Swing drills will be introduced so that participants will learn how to feel a good golf swing. Participants are encouraged to bring their own clubs; equipment will be provided if necessary. Adults only. Limited to 15 participants.

What You Need to Know About Owning a New Pet, 11 a.m. – 12 noon and 1 p.m. – 2 p.m., Farnsworth Hall, Room 112 by Erica McKee, Instructional Support Associate -Veterinary Science Technology and the New York State Association of Veterinary Technicians Students -- This seminar will convey the importance of vaccinating pets, including what each vaccination protects against and how deworming is essential to protect pets from internal parasites. Flea and tick prevention will be discussed, as well as how these measures will protect pets from external parasites. Products to treat them will be revealed.

Microsoft Excel, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m., Bush Hall, Room 302 by Shannon Shoemaker, Assistant Professor - Business -- Participants will learn how to use Microsoft® Excel to track family budgets and spending.

Plant Propagation and Repotting, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m., Farnsworth Hall, Greenhouse by SUNY Delhi's Horticulture Club -- Students will demonstrate house plant propagation and repotting techniques in the Farnsworth Greenhouse.

Introduction to the Golf Swing for Children, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m., The Bubble, Clark Field House by SUNY Delhi Professional Golf Management Students -- Participants will learn the fundamentals of a golf swing from students enrolled in the Professional Golf Management program. Getting More Bang for Your Buck: How to Travel More with Less, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m., Bush Hall, Room 226 by Dr. David Brower, Department Chair and Associate Professor – Hospitality Management -- Learn how to get the most out of your travel dollars. Participants will leave the seminar armed with a list of websites and other resources to book the next dream vacation.

Free Swim in College Pool, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., Kunsela Hall

Microsoft PowerPoint, 2 p.m.- 3 p.m. Bush Hall Room 302 by Shannon Shoemaker, Assistant Professor - Business -- Participants will create presentations for work or play working with this widely-used software.

Tips, Tricks, and Apps for Your Android Tablet or Phone, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m., Bush Hall, Room 226 by Bill Williams, Assistant Professor - Business -- This workshop will discuss and demonstrate several devices including the Google Nexus 7, audio connectivity, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a number of interesting applications. An open discussion will attempt to answer questions about these new technologies.
