Community Performance Series will present a professional production of “Chicago” (seen in rehearsal on stage here) from July 20 to 25 at SUNY Potsdam’s Performing Arts Center.

POTSDAM, NY (07/17/2015)(readMedia)-- Community Performance Series will continue its summer musical series with "Chicago," showing from Monday, July 20 to Saturday, July 25.

There will be evening performances at 7:30 p.m. each night, with afternoon matinees offered at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, and Saturday, July 25. "Chicago" will be presented in the Proscenium Theater at SUNY Potsdam's new Performing Arts Center.

Broadway's longest-running American musical revival, "Chicago" is a Prohibition-era based satire that tells the story of two rival vaudevillian murderesses locked up in the Cook County jail. Nightclub star Velma is serving time for killing her husband and sister after finding the two entangled. Driven chorus girl Roxie has been tossed in the joint for bumping off her lover. Not one to rest on her laurels, Velma enlists the help of prison matron Mama Morton and slickster lawyer Billy Flynn, who turn Velma's incarceration into a murder-of-the-week media frenzy, thus preparing the world for a splashy showbiz comeback. Roxie, however, has some of her own tricks in store, too.

This universal tale of fame and fortune is brimming with show-stopping songs and mesmerizing dance numbers, earning six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy.

"Geared towards a more mature audience, we give 'Chicago' the same rating as the movie. This musical features several recognizable songs like 'All that Jazz,' and the high-energy dance numbers that have become the hallmark of CPS summer theatre. We again welcome back the very talented Donna Drake, who has directed our productions of 'Cats,' 'Anything Goes,' 'Hairspray' and 'Little Shop of Horrors,'" said CPS Executive Director Amy Flack.
