POTSDAM, NY (02/27/2018) (readMedia)-- Community Performance Series will present the world-renowned brass quintet Canadian Brass on Friday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m., in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music.
For select pieces during the concert, the group will be joined by special guests from the Potsdam Brass Quintet, the Crane School of Music's Frackenpohl Honors Brass Quintet and the Crane Concert Choir. This performance is sponsored by Northern New York Community Foundation.
Canadian Brass will perform a wide variety of music during the concert, ranging from selections from "West Side Story" to the Beatles' "Penny Lane."
The concert will also include a very special tribute to Crane School of Music Professor Emeritus Dr. Arthur Frackenpohl. In addition to publishing more than 400 instrumental and choral compositions throughout his career, Frackenpohl has arranged several works for Canadian Brass.
"This concert will have so much to offer. The group's repertoire includes an array of sound from gospel, jazz, Broadway and even the Beatles catalogue -- not to mention the exciting collaborations planned. In addition to all of this, Canadian Brass will present a very touching tribute to a great friend, Dr. Arthur Frackenpohl. It's going to be a one-of-a-kind performance," said CPS Executive Director Jason L. Dominie.
As true masters of concert presentations, Canadian Brass has developed a uniquely engaging stage presence and rapport with audiences. Each of the quintet's concerts show the full range, from trademark baroque and Dixieland tunes, to new compositions and arrangements created especially for them -- from formal classical presentation to music served up with lively dialogue. The hallmark of any Canadian Brass performance is entertainment, spontaneity, virtuosity and, most of all, fun -- but never at the expense of the music. Whatever the style, the music is central and performed with utmost dedication, skill and excellence.
"One need not be partial to brass, or even to classical music, to love Canadian Brass. For these famous five are masters not only of music, but also of presentation. After 40 years on stage, they've got the chops of virtuosos and the deadpan delivery of the best stand-up comics," raved the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.
