Complementary / Alternative Medicine Presentation at Des Moines University Open to All

Students in Des Moines University's Holistic Medicine Club invite you to hear Brent Bauer, M.D., director of the complementary and integrative medicine program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., on April 1 at noon.

The presentation is free and open to all. Dr. Bauer will be in the Student Education Center auditorium, 3300 Grand Ave. in Des Moines. He will present "Integrative Health Care at the Mayo Clinic: Research Informing Practice."

"Dr. Bauer is a leader in the field and we're very excited to learn about his research and methods for integrating complementary and alternative medicine into a western medical practice," said Kayla Knudsen, co-president of the Holistic Medicine Club and D.O. student in the class of 2011.

He will cover several topics including the history and current use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and integrative medicine in the United States. He will also discuss developing a practical approach to reviewing information available on various CAM/integrative medicine topics, communicating with patients about their usage of CAM/integrative medicine and how to incorporate evidence-based therapies for patient and caregiver well-being.

Dr. Bauer is board-certified in internal medicine, serves on the editorial board of the Mayo Clinic Health Letter and has authored several papers and book chapters on alternative medicine topics. He has been with Mayo since 1992. He is currently collaborating on more than 20 research studies at Mayo to evaluate complementary and alternative therapies and treatments.
