SEWARD, NEB. (07/12/2018) Concordia University, Nebraska will offer an online Master of Arts in school counseling beginning fall 2018.
According to the Nebraska Department of Education, Teacher Shortage Survey Teacher, there is a school counselor shortage in Nebraska proposed for the 2018-2019 academic year. Additionally, because of the recent approval and amendment to Rule 20, those individuals without teaching experience may seek licensure for Professional School Counseling in Nebraska.
"Concordia University Nebraska is known for our enduring commitment to education and preparing tomorrow's teachers for success in the 21st century school," said Jessica Brashear, program developer. "It seems fitting, that our College of Graduate Studies would provide a program to adequately prepare Professional School Counselors to do the same."
The Master of Arts in School Counseling will prepare students for work and licensure as Pre-Kindergarten - grade 12 school counselors. This is a two track program. Track 1 includes 50 credit hours serving already certified teachers. Track 2 conforms to Rule 24 and includes an additional 12 credit hours for those without a teaching credential.
"The program fully aligns with the American School Counseling Association's (ASCA) National Model and school counselor competencies," said Jon Moberly, dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Adult Education. "Therefore, graduates will be equipped to design, implement, deliver, and assess comprehensive school counseling programs."
The program is 100% online making it unique, marketable, and efficient for working adults. Most programs that are online still require residencies on campus for extended weekends or a couple of weeks. Concordia's program allows students to practice skills and gain hands-on experiences in schools close to home, under the supervision of practicing professional school counselors, when it works in their schedule.
