Dr. Melissa Marko was named assistant professor of biological sciences at University of the Sciences

PHILADELPHIA, PA (10/01/2013)(readMedia)-- Dr. Melissa Marko was named assistant professor of biological sciences at University of the Sciences. Dr. Marko was appointed to visiting assistant professor at USciences in 2011 after being hired for a postdoctoral fellowship in 2009.

Dr. Marko's research interests involve bioengineering of E. coli and Saccharomyces cervisiae and the role of antioxidants in cell signaling and mechanisms of health promotion. Her current research focuses on the biosynthetic pathway of the antioxidant carnosic acid found in the herb rosemary and its effects on E. coli and Saccharomyces cervisiae.

At USciences, her teaching responsibilities will continue to include basic nutrition, cell biology methods lecture and laboratory, general biology laboratory, and microbiology laboratory.

Dr. Marko received both her PhD and MS in cell and molecular nutrition from Tuft University. She also earned a BS in nutritional science as well as a BS in life science in Pennsylvania State University. In addition to her degrees, Dr. Marko was a teaching postdoctoral fellow at University of the Sciences and a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University.

Originally from Vienna, Va., Dr. Marko currently resides in Conshohocken, Pa.
