Cookie Creativity Wins State Fair Prizes

DES MOINES, IA (08/11/2018) (readMedia)-- Creating award winning scratch baked cookies was the challenge faced by competitors in the Nan's Nummiest Cookies competition judged Thursday at the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

Emily Akkermann of Prescott won first place in the Chocolate Cookies division. Nora Sweeney of Des Moines claimed second place and Rose Ridgway of Johnston took third place.

In the Frosted Cut Out Cookies division, Brenda Becker of Pella won first place. Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville earned second place and Theresa Sens of Des Moines claimed third place.

Entries were judged on flavor, appearance and texture.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
