Cooks Come Out of Their Shells in State Fair Egg Competition

DES MOINES, IA (08/19/2018) (readMedia)-- Holly Houg of Urbandale won First Place Overall and a $300 cash award in the Egg-Ceptional Eggs Cooking Contest judged Wednesday at the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

Marianne Carlson of Jefferson earned Second Place Overall and $200. Susan Schultz of Haverhill claimed third place and $100.

Contestants were challenged to create a winning dish that contained at least four whole eggs and 12 ingredients or less.

Entries were judged on flavor, appearance, texture and ease of preparation.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
