ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (05/21/2013)(readMedia)-- Dr. Beverly "Bev" Copeland Carmichael has been appointed Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. She will assume her new post on Aug. 1.

"We are delighted that Beverly Carmichael has accepted our offer and that she will be joining our staff as the Vice President of Institutional Advancement," said Flagler President William T. Abare Jr., Ed.D. "As the chief development officer, she will be responsible for all aspects of our fundraising program to include annual giving, capital giving and planned giving. She brings an enormous amount of experience, energy and passion for her work, and I am confident that she will do an outstanding job leading and directing our fundraising efforts. Her knowledge of and affection for her alma mater will be evident in advancing the mission and goals of our college."

Carmichael has served as Assistant Chancellor for University Advancement at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay since July 15, 2010. During her tenure at UW-Green Bay, she led her advancement staff to establish the UW-Green Bay Foundation, which manages over $30 million in endowed and expendable assets.

Carmichael's bachelor's degree is from Flagler College, and she formerly served as Director of Development at Flagler in the 1980s.

She replaces current Vice President for Institutional Advancement Mark Whittaker.

"Mark Whittaker is the consummate professional," Abare said. "He has more than 42 years of fundraising experience and has served as the chief advancement officer at five institutions, including Stetson University, Hollins University, Rhodes College, Sweet Briar College and Flagler College. Mark has been at Flagler College for three years and under his leadership, we raised $6.5 million in 2010-2011 and $7.2 million in 2011-2012. Through the end of April, we had raised more than $4 million and have exceeded most of our fundraising goals for the year. He has done an outstanding job at Flagler, and he will be missed."

Carmichael's professional background includes serving as a partner for five years with Don Salmon in the Winston Group, a consulting firm in Green Bay, Wisconsin, that specializes in capital campaign fundraising and development.

At UW-Green Bay, she served on the Chancellor's Council of Trustees and UW-Green Bay Foundation Board of Directors, the Encompass Childcare Foundation Board of Directors, the Executive Committee of the Community Partnership for Children in Green Bay and the East High School Institute for the Fine Arts Board of Directors. Her extensive experience as a community volunteer includes serving as president of the board of Encompass Early Education and Care, vice-president of the Service League of Green Bay and as vice-president of the Women's Fund of Greater Green Bay.

Carmichael has served on the UW-Green Bay Founders Association Board of Directors since 2005. Her area of expertise is strategic planning and she has conducted strategic planning sessions for numerous local charitable organizations including the Oral Health Partnership of Brown County. She was the first woman president of the National Accreditation Council for the Blind and Visually Handicapped in 1994-96.

She earned her doctorate in higher education and management science and a master's degree from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C.

She spent 10 years in Washington, D.C., where she served as associate executive director of The American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE) and director of development for the American Association for Community and Junior Colleges (AACJC).

Carmichael's first job was as a third grade teacher at the Evelyn Hamblen Elementary School in St. Augustine, and she served as Assistant Dean of Students for four years at her alma mater, Flagler College, from 1973-1976.

She is married to Don Carmichael, General Manager of WBAY-TV2, and they have five daughters.
