POTSDAM, NY (08/26/2011)(readMedia)-- The SUNY Potsdam Julia E. Crane Alumni Association recently honored Richard Regan, a member of the Class of 1991, with the 2011 Helen M. Hosmer Excellence in Music Teaching Award at the College's annual Reunion Weekend.

The Helen M. Hosmer Excellence in Music Teaching Award is presented each year to an alumnus or alumna in public school music education who has demonstrated exemplary service in any of the areas of choral, instrumental or general music education.

"I am truly honored and humbled to be considered, let alone receive this award," he said. "Thank you."

Richard Regan '91 has taught instrumental music at Monroe-Woodbury High School in Central Valley, N.Y., since 1997. His responsibilities include teaching brass and percussion lessons and directing the Freshman Band, Chamber Winds and Wind Ensemble.

His Wind Ensemble has consistently earned the Level VI Gold with Distinction rating at New York State School Music Association major organization festivals since 1997. Regan's students characterize him with superlatives such as "inspirational," "incredible," "awesome," "amazing," "magical," and even more importantly "understanding" and "helpful."

His Chamber Winds were selected to perform at the Chamber Society of Lincoln Center Young Artists Program in Alice Tully Hall and have also appeared on the National Public Radio broadcast series "From the Top."

In keeping with the long-established tradition of Crane graduates, Regan continues to be an accomplished performer, conductor and music educator.

In addition to his public school duties, he conducts the Greater New York Wind Symphony, the Orange County Youth Symphony and the Hudson Valley Honors Youth Wind Ensemble. Regan recently led the Orange County Youth Symphony on a seven-day performance tour of the Czech Republic, and in June 2011, led a combined group of American and Czech performers in a cultural exchange.

In addition to his conducting obligations, Regan enjoys an active schedule as a professional trombonist and brass clinician in the New York metropolitan region, and currently holds the principal trombone desk in the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Regan received his master's degree in trombone performance from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla., and his Bachelor in Music Education degree with a performer's certificate in trombone from SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music, where he studied with Dr. Mark Hartman.
