Crane Faculty Recital Highlights Works Based on Poetry of Anna Akhmatova

SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music Presents Faculty Recital Featuring Kathleen Miller, Kirk Severtson and Mathias Wexler

POTSDAM, NY (09/23/2014)(readMedia)-- An upcoming faculty recital at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will highlight the poetry of Anna Akhmatova, one of the greatest Russian poets of the 20th century.

Soprano Kathleen Miller will perform alongside pianist Kirk Severtson and cellist Mathias Wexler on Monday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

The performance will include works by Sergei Slonimskii, Sergei Prokofiev, and John Taverner. The works include poetry by Akhmatova, who is known for her clear, economical poetic voice, which is full of passion without being emotionally indulgent. Although the poet survived the atrocities of the Stalinist era, many of her friends and loved ones did not; she carried these tragedies with her and it can be felt through her verse as well.

This event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

About the performer:

Dr. Kathleen Miller earned her doctorate in vocal performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, with a focus in Russian studies. She has performed the North American premiere of "Russkaya Tetrad" ("Russian Notebook") by Valery Gavrilin, and has also presented the rarely heard song cycle "Harmonium" by Vincent Persichetti, also alongside Severtson. Miller particularly enjoyed performing contemporary music.

This concert will be broadcast live on the SUNY Potsdam website at the performance time. To view the program and see other upcoming streaming performances, visit www.potsdam.edu/academics/Crane/streaming.
