POTSDAM, NY (01/30/2012)(readMedia)-- Two talented professors at SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will perform an upcoming concert together with a program that starts and ends with dance-inspired works.
Featuring Dr. Julianne Kirk-Doyle on clarinet and Dr. Kathryn Sherman on piano, the next installment of the Faculty Recital Series will be offered on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.
Dr. Kirk-Doyle and Dr. Sherman will perform four pieces that evening. The works include an arrangement of a suite from the ballet "Romeo and Juliet, Op. 64" by Sergei Prokofieff, the "Sonata for Clarinet and Piano" by Francis Poulenc, the 1980 work "Sequenza IXa per Clarinetto Solo" by Luciano Berio, and "Dante Dances (Dante's Inferno)" by Dan Welcher.
"I look at the recital as being framed by 'dance' music. It is also the 50th anniversary of Poulenc's Sonata," Kirk-Doyle said. "The Berio Sequenza IXa is not done very often, but is a major warhorse in the clarinet unaccompanied repertoire. Berio wrote sequenzas for most all of the instruments, and they are incredibly difficult, stretching the player to their absolute limit."
This concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.
