SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music Welcomes Patricia Shehan Campbell, the 2016 Joy Anthony Douglass Master Teacher, for Residency

Patricia Shehan Campbell will visit SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music next week, as the 2016 Joy Anthony Douglass Visiting Master Teacher.

POTSDAM, NY (09/23/2016)(readMedia)-- SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will welcome the respected expert on music education and ethnomusicology, Patricia Shehan Campbell, as the 2016 Joy Anthony Douglass Visiting Master Teacher, in an upcoming residency.

During her visit to Crane, she will share her expertise with undergraduate music education classes and with performing ensembles. Campbell will be on campus from Monday, Sept. 26 through Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Highlights of her visit include a workshop with the Phoenix Club and Crane Men's Ensemble and an interactive session with first grade students from St. Mary's Elementary School and Crane student teachers.

In addition, Campbell will also attend the Cinema 10 screening of the documentary "For the Love of the Mambo," which follows members of the Crane Latin Ensemble as they learn from members of the Tito Puente Orchestra, on Monday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Roxy Theater. The screening will be followed by a Crane Latin Ensemble performance at Maxfield's.

Campbell will present a keynote address, "Criss-Crossing Fields: Evolutionary Intersections of Ethnomusicology and Music Education," on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

Campbell's visit to Potsdam is made possible through the Joy Anthony Douglass Visiting Master Teacher Fund, which was established by Joy Anthony Douglass '56 to honor the transformative experiences she had as a student during her time at Crane. The fund enables visiting master teachers to share their insights and expertise with Crane School of Music students and faculty, as well as music educators throughout the region.

About the visiting master teacher:

Dr. Patricia Shehan Campbell teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at the interface of ethnomusicology and music education. She is the Donald E. Petersen Professor of Music at the University of Washington's School of Music. Her interests include music in early and middle childhood, world music pedagogy and the use of movement as a pedagogical tool. She has delivered lectures and conducted clinics across North America and in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. She is the recipient of a Taichi Traditional Music Award and a Senior Researcher Award from the Society for Research in Music Education. Campbell is chair of the Board for Smithsonian Folkways, where she works on curricular development of archived recordings, for the dissemination through teaching of American and global music expressions in schools and communities. An internationally recognized scholar, she has authored numerous books, including "Music in Childhood," "Teaching Music Globally," "Songs in Their Heads" and "Lessons from the World." She holds a Ph.D. from Kent State University, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University. Campbell is a certified teacher of Dalcroze Eurhythmics, and continues her study of music's transmission processes through applied lessons with visiting artists, culture-bearers and community musicians.
