POTSDAM, NY (09/10/2014)(readMedia)-- The Crane School of Music Faculty Recital Series will continue with an evening of Shakespearean song on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater.

Baritone Jonathan Stinson and pianist François Germain will present works by Thomas Arne, Roger Quilter, Hubert Parry, Gerald Finzi and Michael Tippett.

"Shakespeare's poems and plays have inspired composers to write music for over 400 years," Stinson said. "Many of these texts were written by Shakespeare to be 'songs' within a play, and composers throughout the centuries have been asked to set these songs to music for theatrical productions. The plays represented in this recital span Shakespeare's entire career."

Works to be performed include texts from Shakespeare's plays "The Two Gentlemen of Verona," "Love's Labour's Lost," "As You Like It," "Twelfth Night," "Cymbeline" and "The Tempest." In addition, one song cycle includes selections from Shakespeare's sonnets.

This concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.

This concert will be broadcast live on the SUNY Potsdam website at the performance time. To view the program and see other upcoming streaming performances, visit www.potsdam.edu/academics/Crane/streaming.
