Arizona State University Professor of Music Dr. Sandra Stauffer will visit SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music as the 2014 Joy Anthony Douglass Visiting Master Teacher.

POTSDAM, NY (10/24/2014)(readMedia)-- SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will welcome Dr. Sandra Stauffer of Arizona State University as the 2014 Joy Anthony Douglass Visiting Music Teacher, in an upcoming residency.

As a professor of music and associate dean at Arizona State, Stauffer has extensive experience in music teacher education, creativity and composition. During her visit to Crane, Stauffer will share her expertise with both undergraduate and graduate music education courses, and in two public lectures.

Her first address will focus on creativity, and will be offered on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. in the Learning & Teaching Excellence Center (LTEC), located in the College's Frederick W. Crumb Memorial Library.

Stauffer will also speak about core principles in music teacher education, on Friday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall.

These events are free, and the public is invited to attend.

Stauffer's visit to Potsdam is made possible through the Joy Anthony Douglass Visiting Master Teacher Fund, which was established by Joy Anthony Douglass (SUNY Potsdam Class of 1956), to honor the transformative experiences she had as a student during her time at Crane. The fund enables visiting master teachers to share their insights and expertise with Crane students and faculty, as well as with music educators from throughout the region.

About the visiting master teacher:

Dr. Sandra Stauffer is a professor of music at Arizona State University. Her research interests include creativity, composition and music teacher preparation, using narrative inquiry, arts-based educational research and qualitative research designs. Her recent publications include two co-authored/co-edited books on narrative inquiry in music education, as well as research articles on children and adolescents as composers and book chapters on creativity in music. Her creative activities include collaborations with various educators and musicians, including work with composer Morton Subotnick on the development of music software for children.

In addition to her research publications, Stauffer has written articles on music teaching and learning for various audiences, and designed and contributed to pedagogical publications, K-8 texts and music software programs and apps. She was a contributing author for the Music Connection textbook series, and she is a primary author for the Silver Burdett Making Music text series. Her work also includes education materials for orchestras and other performing arts organizations. She is a popular guest lecturer, clinician and consultant for music education and arts education organizations throughout the United States and abroad.

Stauffer was the first Evelyn Smith Professor of Music (2003-2006) at ASU, and she currently serves as coordinator of doctoral studies in music education. Prior to joining the ASU faculty, she was a faculty member and coordinator of the music education division at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Md. Prior to her academic appointments, Stauffer was a music educator in public schools in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Virginia, and served as a volunteer music teacher in Arizona. She is a graduate of West Chester University and the University of Michigan.
