DECORAH, IA (07/11/2012)(readMedia)-- Luther College Greening Churches project, will host a gathering on Tuesday, July 24, 7-8 p.m., at Shirley Baker Commons at Luther College.

Led by Callie Mabry and Kristi Holmberg, interns with the Green Churches project, the gathering is open to all interested members of area church congregations. Refreshments will be served.

Titled "Cultivating Hope," the gathering is part of the free, volunteer Greening churches Project that provides information and resources to equip members of local congregations with tools to "green the church" and foster community-wide networking and discussion on sustainability issues.

The July 24 gathering presents and celebrates the work of the Greening Churches Summer Internship. Materials and information available will include "Cultivating Hope: A Greening Churches Guide" written by Mabry and Holmberg.

Holmberg graduated in May from Luther College with the bachelor or arts degree in religion. Mabry is a Luther junior, majoring in environmental studies and history. They are serving nine northern Iowa congregations this summer with projects on sustainability and environmental stewardship.

"As a communities of faith we have the obligation to love our neighbors as ourselves," Mabry said, "and therefore the sacred responsibility to respect and conserve the resources we all share."

"We also find hope and joy in community, knowing others walk alongside us on the path towards sustainable living," she said.
