Cultural Center to Showcase World Champion Sand Sculptors, State's Largest Arts Show

DES MOINES, IA (08/05/2010)(readMedia)-- World champion sand sculptors will join the state's largest arts show in the Patty and Jim Cownie Cultural Center for "Non Stop Fun" during the 2010 Iowa State Fair, set for August 12-22.

Sandscapes, a team of national, international, and world champion sand sculptors, will return to the Cultural Center atrium to construct a masterpiece. Watch the progress unfold as the team works throughout the Fair to complete the sculpture, showcasing their talents from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day of the Fair.

In addition, the state's largest arts show will be packed with entries in Fine Arts, Dollhouses and Miniature Rooms, Woodcarving, Creative Arts and Photography. A record-setting 4,802 photos were entered in this year's Photography Salon based on the theme, "Iowa Family Farm." Approximately 1,100 of the best photos will be on display throughout the Fair.

A number of artists will put their talents on display for Fairgoers in a series of demonstrations. Topics include barbed wire art, loom weaving, tie-dye techniques, rubber stamp techniques, wheel thrown pottery, collage, mixed media, painting and glass bead making.

Fairgoers will have several opportunities to express their own creativity through daily workshops and make-and-take sessions, including silver necklace making, ceramic animal figurine making, rubber stamp art, silver ring making and blown glass ornament art.

Art Attack, located in the Cultural Center Courtyard, is open daily from 1-5 p.m. and offers young artists the opportunity to stretch their creativity and imagination with free daily arts and crafts activities designed especially for kids.
