HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/10/2013)(readMedia)-- At Final Convocation on April 25, Hampden-Sydney College sophomore Damien Rashad Sharp received the Rhetoric Best Speaker Award, presented by Dr. Lizabeth A. Rand, Elliott Associate Professor of Rhetoric. Damien's winning speech was entitled, "Less is More." The Speech Contest is funded by the John Augustus Moore Oral Rhetoric Fund. The fund was presented to the College in 1988 by Elizabeth and Mary Moore in honor of their nephew, John Augustus Moore, Class of 1978. John's aunts describe their nephew as an energetic, highly motivated, and well-read student, a man who embodied H-SC's vision of the good man and good citizen. They wished to establish a fund that would enhance oral rhetoric at Hampden-Sydney College.

Damien was recently elected Secretary/Treasurer of Student Government for the 2013-2014 academic year. He is a member of the President's Men, the Pre-Law Society, and the service organization Rotaract. A government major, Damien graduated from Fauquier High School and is the son of Gaynita Sharp and Brian Luther of Warrenton.
