SPRINGFIELD, MA (11/28/2011)(readMedia)-- Dan Rich of Plainville, CT, was recently named a recipient of the Skookum Award, an honor presented by Western New England University's Alumni Association. The Skookum is awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in all their endeavors: academics, co-curricular activities, sports, and community service. "Skookum" is a Native American Chinook Indian word meaning "excellence." Rich was one of 15 outstanding seniors to receive the award during the University's Homecoming Weekend.
A Political Science major with a minor in Philosophy, Rich is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Mortar Board honor societies, and was recently awarded the Dean's Achievement Award for the School of Arts and Sciences. He has served as a member of Class Council, as a math tutor, and moved up the ranks within the Pre-Law Society, first as Treasurer, then Vice President, and finally serving as President this year. Rich has been a part of two Alternative Spring Break trips, traveling to the Shawnee National Forest in Illinois where he worked on environmental preservation projects and to Washington, DC, to work on a Hunger and Homelessness program, where he served as trip leader.
