DANVILLE, KY (09/28/2011)(readMedia)-- Danny Miller of Evansville is one of 10 first-year students at Centre College to receive "full-ride-plus" scholarships as part of The Brown Fellows Program. The initiative, in collaboration with the James Graham Brown Foundation, covers not only tuition and room and board but four remarkable summer enrichment programs, field-based experiential learning opportunities, on-campus program mentors, and customized leadership projects.
Miller, a graduate of Francis J. Reitz High School, traveled with other Brown Fellows this summer to Rome, Naples, Florence and Venice on a tour of Italy. During his time there he was part of a select group that wrote articles for publication in the Italian magazine, La Gazzetta Italiana.
"The articles gave us valuable experience in areas we would not ordinarily have paid much attention to," Miller says. "Furthermore, they forced us to open our minds and look around, which in turn led to a much more fulfilling and enriching experience as a whole. Instead of just focusing on the general 'touristy' things, we had to dig deeper and really look at the nuances of the history and culture around us, which, in the end, was the whole point of the trip."
The Brown Fellowship is one of the most competitive undergraduate scholarships in Kentucky and is among the top scholarship programs in the nation. Centre is the only private college in Kentucky selected for a Brown Fellows Program
"Four years from now, it's likely that my favorite Centre College experience will have been something that I can't even guess at now," Miller says. "The range and breadth of opportunities Centre-and the Brown Fellowship-seem to provide are so incredible it's almost breathtaking to an 18-year-old."
Miller is the son of Jane Duesterberg and Paul Miller of Evansville.
