Democrats Should Renounce Attacks On Petraeus

Mondello Statement

ALBANY, NY (09/13/2007)(readMedia)-- The disturbing reports surrounding the Moveon.org attacks on the distinguished career and impeccable reputation of Four-Star General David Petraeus should be of tremendous concern to all New Yorkers. These insulting and slanderous attacks are misguided and without any factual support.

General Petraeus is a true American hero and exemplary public servant, and his recently submitted report is a thorough and vital update on the War on Terror. Baseless partisan attacks like these are a dangerous distraction from the substantive discussion about the best way to pursue and win the War on Terror in order to keep Americans safe.

Of equal concern, the Democrats from New York State, including Senator Hillary Clinton and Representatives Kirstin Gillibrand, Michael Acuri and John Hall have not voiced their opposition to these baseless attacks. This raises many questions for Senator Clinton in particular, as she seeks to be our Commander-in-Chief and lead our armed forces. Additionally, Representatives Gillibrand and Arcuri have accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Moveon.org.

These attacks insult and slander not just General Petraeus, but all the dedicated men and women in the armed forces who put their lives on the line to keep us safe. New York’s Democrats should do the right thing, renounce this vicious, unfounded attack campaign and return any tainted campaign contributions they have received from Moveon.org immediately.
