ALBANY, NY (02/16/2010)(readMedia)-- New York Secretary of State Lorraine A. Cortés-Vázquez today announced that the agency's Division of Corporations received a total of 11,489 applications for incorporation in Jan. 2010 – compared to the 10,932 applications it received in Jan. 2009, or an increase of 5.1 percent. Additionally, she announced that the Division of Licensing Services saw the number of licensed professionals in two key occupations – appearance enhancement operators and real estate brokers and salespeople – rose five and nine percent, respectively, from Jan. 2009 to Jan. 2010.
"Individuals starting new businesses in New York is key to our state's economic recovery. Governor Paterson along with the Department of State are working to create an environment that makes it easy to start businesses and also find important jobs in a number of different industries," Secretary of State Cortés-Vázquez said. "New York is at the heart of the national real estate market, and given the troubles in that market, it is no surprise that we find ourselves now with nearly 10 percent fewer licensed real estate salespeople and brokers than this time last year. At the same time, the recent growth in newly registered business entities is promising."
