Distinguished Albany Law Firm Establishes Health Care Fraud and Abuse Unit

ALBANY, NY (10/17/2007)(readMedia)-- O’Connell and Aronowitz, one of upstate New York’s oldest and most prestigious law firms, has formed a Health Care Fraud and Abuse Unit. The Health Care Fraud and Abuse Unit is comprised of six highly experienced attorneys and concentrates in all fraud and abuse issues, both civil and criminal, that impact health care providers.

“It is a reality in today’s regulatory environment that health care providers are forced to navigate within a labyrinth of complex governmental regulations, and one wrong step can carry drastic consequences,” said Jeffrey J. Sherrin, Esq., President of O’Connell and Aronowitz. Sherrin continued, “Every day we see our health care providers struggle with the threat of increased governmental policing and enforcement in Medicaid and Medicare. Our new Health Care Fraud and Abuse Unit brings together well-established legal talents in the field, with the unique resources of O’Connell and Aronowitz which enable us to provide our clients with unparalleled advice, advocacy, and action in their defense.”

The new Health Care Fraud and Abuse Unit brings together nearly 140 years of experience in health care and criminal law. The unit is led by David R. Ross, former New York State Medicaid Inspector General; prominent defense attorneys Stephen R. Coffey and Andrew R. Safranko, Michael P. McDermott, former Chief Assistant District Attorney, who successfully prosecuted one of the highest profile murder cases in upstate New York; and leading health care attorneys Cornelius D. Murray and Jeffrey J. Sherrin. This team of lawyers brings a wealth of experience from all sides of this issue: government regulators, former prosecutors, health care litigators and criminal defense attorneys. “Few law firms in the State can offer health care providers such knowledgeable and experienced counsel,” said Sherrin. The firm’s location in New York’s capital, and its proximity to state government offices, ideally lends itself to the ability of the Health Care Fraud and Abuse Unit to be a rapid response team to react to governmental action of all types.

O’Connell and Aronowitz is one of the largest health care law firms in upstate New York. It provides its health care clients with representation in all matters relevant to health care including federal and state administrative, civil and criminal proceedings, and offers extensive preventative compliance counseling.
