Dr. Anthony Palumbo of Utica Receives Clarkson University's Top Alumni Honor

POTSDAM, NY (07/26/2010)(readMedia)-- Dr. Anthony J. Palumbo of Utica, N.Y., ophthalmologist, eye surgeon and medical director of the Dove Eye and Laser Center in New Hartford, N.Y., has received the Golden Knight Award from his alma mater, Clarkson University.

Presented each year during Reunion Weekend, Clarkson's most prestigious alumni award is given to alumni who have distinguished themselves either by service to Clarkson through Alumni Association activities or have demonstrated outstanding career achievement, bringing distinction to themselves and to Clarkson.

Palumbo received his bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Clarkson in 1960.

Following graduation with a doctorate in medicine and surgery, cum laude, from the renowned University of Bologna, Italy, Dr. Palumbo completed his residency and fellowship at St. Mary's Hospital/Rochester Eye Institute in Rochester, N.Y. He became chief resident of ophthalmology during his last year in the program. Palumbo also completed an ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship at the prestigious Manhattan Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital. At Park Ridge Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., he completed a fellowship in medical surgical treatments of anterior segment diseases, including glaucoma surgery, cataract and lens implantation surgery, corneal surgery, and refractive surgery.

From 1990 to 1991, Palumbo participated in a refractive surgery fellowship in London, England with Dr. John Marshall, considered by many research scientists as the Father of Refractive Surgery.

Palumbo has received numerous awards in recognition of the exceptional patient care he has provided, as well as for his involvement in humanitarian efforts. He was the honored recipient of the Physician CARE Award in 2000, given by the Faxton Hospital - St. Luke's Health Care System for excellence in patient care and exceptional customer service. In 2001, he received the SCROLL Award from the Central New York Academy of Medicine, Inc., in recognition of his meritorious achievement in the advancement of scientific programs and humanitarian attainment. Palumbo was also chosen as the Humanitarian of the Year in 2003 at the American Diabetes Association Annual Charity Affair. The Mayor of the City of Utica honored him with a proclamation on October 17, 2003 for services and contributions to his community with Recognition of the Dr. Anthony J. Palumbo Day.

Palumbo has served as a Clarkson reunion giving volunteer in the past and established two scholarship funds: the Dick Pratt Endowed Prize Fund and the Palumbo Endowed Chemical Engineering Scholarship. He currently serves on the Clarkson Arts & Sciences Dean's Advisory Council.

He lives in Utica, N.Y., with his wife, Phyllis. They have two daughters, Joanne and Terese Lyn.
