WESTBURY, NY (04/25/2011)(readMedia)-- Paul Anthony Hamlin, MD, FCCP, a board-certified specialist in pulmonary disease who practices in Lake Success, was elected President of the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) at its 205th annual House of Delegates (HOD) meeting in Tarrytown, NY, on April 9. Dr. Hamlin will oversee all the public health and legislative activities of the state's principal professional organization for physicians.

Dr. Hamlin earned his bachelor of science degree in chemistry from St. John's University and his medical degree from New York Medical College. He completed his internship training at St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan but then interrupted his medical training for two years to serve as a US Air Force captain in Viet Nam for which he was awarded both the Bronze Star Medal and the Conspicuous Service Cross of New York State. He then returned for his resident training in internal medicine to the Metropolitan Hospital Medical Center, where he was chief resident and obtained his sub-specialty training in pulmonary medicine. Dr. Hamlin also earned certification in both specialties from the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the Nassau County Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Hamlin is now a partner of Great Neck Medical Associates, a multi-specialty group in Lake Success. He has attending privileges at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Hospital in Manhasset and is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine.

Dr. Hamlin has been active in organized medicine's efforts to improve New York's healthcare environment for most of his career. He has served as both trustee and president of the Nassau Academy of Medicine, as well as president of his state district branch and the Nassau County Medical Society. Dr. Hamlin represented his county on MSSNY's Council for six years and has been part of NY's delegation to AMA meetings for five years. He has served on numerous committees at all levels, including MSSNY's for organ donation, bio-medical ethics and physician advocacy; and co-chaired committees for membership and MSSNY's political action committee (MSSNYPAC).

Dr. Hamlin is particularly dedicated to stemming the control of government and health insurers, which threaten the ability of physicians to determine and provide quality healthcare to their patients. He believes medical societies can not relent in their fight for collective bargaining rights and medical liability reform.

Dr. Hamlin and his wife Jane live in Roslyn. They have two sons – Paul Jr., an oncologist at Sloane Kettering, and Keith, an attorney in Westchester – and five grandchildren.

More than 300 delegates attended the House of Delegates, April 8-10, to set policy, elect new leaders and recognize the achievements of their colleagues. The primary mission of the not-for-profit Medical Society of the State of New York is to represent the interests of patients and physicians to assure quality healthcare services for all.
