POTSDAM, NY (02/21/2012)(readMedia)-- Dr. Richard E. Lapchick will speak at SUNY Potsdam on Feb. 28, in a presentation sponsored by the athletic department. Director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, Lapchick presents "Your Ethical and Diversity Legacy" at 4 p.m. and "The Healing Power of Sport" at 7:30 p.m., in 106 Kellas Hall.

Lapchick will hold a session at 4 p.m. for athletics staff and campus community members, followed by a 7:30 p.m. session for Bears student-athletes only. Those Potsdam faculty and staff members interested in attending the 4 p.m. presentation are asked to contact the athletic department in advance at extension 3484, or sullivja@potsdam.edu.

Lapchick is the Chair of the DeVos Sports Business Management Graduate Program at the University of Central Florida and the founder and president of the National Consortium for Academics and Sport (NCAS). The NCAS is made up of 230 colleges and universities that have helped more than 31,800 student-athletes return to get their degrees and as well as provided community service to aid the nation's youth.

In 2006, Lapchick helped to found the Hope for Stanley Alliance, which organizes groups of student-athletes and sports management students to travel to New Orleans to help rebuild the devastated Ninth Ward.

Lapchick is a human rights activist and is committed "to equality and his belief that sport can be an effective instrument of positive social change." He led the American sports boycott of South Africa from 1975 until the end of Apartheid in 1991 and was personally invited by Nelson Mandela to his presidential inauguration.

Lapchick has authored 16 books, over 500 articles, is a prolific public speaker as well as a regular columnist for ESPN.com and The Sports Business Journal. He has also appeared numerous times on Good Morning America, Face the Nation, The Today Show, CNN and ESPN.
