ONEONTA, NY (11/04/2011)(readMedia)-- Duncan MacCrea of Alfred Station received a scholarship award during the SUNY Oneonta Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Majors Night on Oct. 20.
MacCrea, a geology major, was selected by the department's faculty to receive the QTZ Scholarship Award, which recognizes high academic standing. Available to geology, water resources and earth science majors at the college, the award was established by three SUNY Oneonta alumni: Terry Quinn, a 1982 earth science graduate; Eric Tappa, who graduated in 1981 with a degree in economics and philosophy; and James Zachos, a 1982 geology graduate.
The scholarship was presented as part of the 35th annual Majors' Night, during which alumni of the department's programs return to campus to discuss their careers and offer advice to current students.
The SUNY Oneonta Department of Earth and Atmospheric Science offers some of the college's fastest-growing programs. In the past two years, the number of students pursuing majors in earth science, environmental science, geology, meteorology, water resources and earth science education increased by 45 percent.
