Dutch Oven Cooking Cast First Place for Des Moines Cook

DES MOINES, IA (09/11/2018) (readMedia)-- Gerald Glass of Des Moines won First Place Overall and Second Place Overall in the Dutch Oven Cooking competition, judged Saturday, August 18 at the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

A Dutch oven is a thick walled cooking pot traditionally made of cast iron, and it has a tight fitting lid. Entries for the Dutch oven division must have been cooked in a Dutch oven and on a grill or open fire.

Entries were judged on taste, ease of preparation and creativity.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
