STORM LAKE, IA (04/25/2019) (readMedia)-- The Student Activities Board at Buena Vista University will help culminate Storm Lake Proud Week by hosting a Community Block Party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, on Grand Avenue, a space that will be closed off from Peterson Drive to West Fourth Street during that time by members of the Storm Lake Police Department working in concert with BVU Campus Security.
The Community Block Party, which is free and open to the public, features activities such as inflatables, like a cliff-climbing obstacle, spin art, dunk tank and more. Food trucks will be on-site for those wishing to purchase snacks and/or lunch items.
BVU junior Justin Forkpa, who is spearheading the effort, attended the Community Block Party held at this time one year ago and is looking forward to see if the festival might become a tradition shared among members of the BVU and Storm Lake communities.
"I had so much fun last year, and it got me thinking about all the things I'd want for the next one," Forkpa says. "My goal was to go bigger with this year's Block Party and there was a lot of work to put into planning it. We have more activities, a variety of food trucks, and a live concert to wrap everything up."
The concert, from 5-6 p.m., features the band Fly By Midnight, and is planned to take place just south of the Estelle Siebens Science Center in the middle of the BVU campus. Fly By Midnight, which has more than 240,000 subscribers to its YouTube channel, is wrapping up a 40-school college tour. The New York-based retro-pop duo features singer/songwriter Justin Bryte and producer/songwriter Slavo.
Buena Vista University will help get the momentum going for Storm Lake Proud Week early in the week as the University and residents throughout Buena Vista County converge on campus and across dozens of sites in and around Storm Lake in observing the 106th annual Buenafication Day on Tuesday.
