Electricians Recruit Apprentices
WATERTOWN, NY (12/08/2009)(readMedia)-- The Electricians Joint Apprenticeship Committee of Watertown, Local Union #910, will conduct a recruitment from January 4, 2010 through December 6, 2010 for ten electrician apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.
Applications can be obtained in person only at the Local Union #910, 25001 Water Street, Watertown, NY or 28 New York Road, Plattsburgh, NY from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the first working Monday of each month during the recruitment period. Applicants must apply in person with a picture I.D., sign for application, and bring an up-to-date resume.
The Committee requires that applicants:
- Must be a minimum of 17 years old (must be at least 18 years of age at the time of selection and prior to indenture).
- Must be at least a high school graduate, or have a general equivalency diploma (GED), or have a two-year Associate Degree or higher. *
- Upon acceptance, will be required to show evidence of successful completion of: two (2) full years of high school math of which one (1) is high school Algebra, Math I, first year high school Regents Math or a post high school algebra course-a letter of verification must be mailed from the school to the union's address (no hand delivered documents will be accepted). *
- *OR: Individuals who can verify (proper documentation required) that they have worked a minimum of eight-thousand (8,000) hours specifically in the electrical construction trade, do not need to meet the requirements of the above asterisked items; individuals who have worked a minimum of forty-five hundred (4,500) hours as a Residential Wireman under an IBEW/NECA Local Collective Bargaining Agreement (proper documentation required), do not need to meet the requirements of the above asterisked items; individuals who have completed at least three (3) years of related instruction and forty-five hundred (4,500) hours of OJT as indentured apprentices in a properly registered electrical construction apprenticeship program not sponsored by IBEW/NECA (proper documentation required), do not need to meet the requirements of the above asterisked items.
- Upon acceptance, will be required to provide an official transcript for high school, post high school education, GED records and any related training.
- Upon acceptance, will be required to submit a DD-214 to verify military training and/or experience if the applicant is a veteran and wishes to receive consideration for such training experience.
- Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by a physician's examination upon acceptance into the program.
- Qualify for an interview using the electrical trade's aptitude test developed and validated by the American Institutes for Research, as administered by the IBEW.
- Must have reliable means of transportation to and from job sites and related instruction classes and present evidence of possession of a valid driver's license.
- Must be a citizen of the U.S. or legally eligible to work in the U.S.
- Prior to being indentured, applicants selected from the pool of interviewed applicants will be required to provide a drug test as decided by the JATC.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
