Elena Castro of Cape Elizabeth Awarded Sarah Michele Guineviere Pyles Memorial Scholarship

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD (12/12/2013)(readMedia)--  Elena Castro, a Cape Elizabeth, Maine native and junior at St. Mary's College of Maryland, was recently awarded the Sarah Michele Guineviere Pyles Memorial Scholarship. Established in 2011, the scholarship benefits political science and art history students who have academic merit and financial need, and who have completed at least one year at St. Mary's.

At St. Mary's College of Maryland, Castro is studying political science, art history and Spanish. Her career goals involve traveling, teaching, and perhaps working for a non-governmental organization.

Outside of the classroom, Castro is a publicity chair for St. Mary's World Carnival, a springtime music and arts festival, and an Orientation Leader. In this capacity, she leads orientation for first year students. She also plays club volleyball, has a Seahawk Radio show, and participates in intramural sports.

St. Mary's College of Maryland, designated the Maryland state honors college in 1992, is ranked one of the best public liberal arts schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. More than 2,000 students attend the college, nestled on the St. Mary's River in Southern Maryland.
