Elevator Servicers & Repairers Recruit Apprentices

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (04/25/2010)(readMedia)-- The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee of the Elevator Industry Local Union # 3 will conduct a recruitment from April 26, 2010 through May 7, 2010 for seventy-five elevator servicer and repairer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications will be available for pick-up during the recruitment period or until 750 applications have been issued, whichever comes first. Applications will be available at the Local Union # 3, 35-40 36th Street, 2nd floor, Long Island City, NY on a first come first served basis from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., during the recruitment period. Only 750 applications will be available for pick up. Only one application will be given to each applicant. Applications will be numbered from 1 to 750 and only those applications will be considered for processing. No duplicate application will be accepted nor exceptions made. All applicants must show proof of identification (Driver's License, U.S. Passport, or any other legally accepted picture I.D. card) to receive an application. No exceptions will be made.

All applications must be returned via: "Certified mail-return receipt requested", by the U.S. postal service and post marked no later than May 17, 2010 as noted on the instructions provided with the application(s) unless otherwise instructed and approved by the JATC, prior to mailing.

A $25.00 testing fee is required on the test date the applicant is scheduled to take the exam. This $25.00 testing fee must be paid in the form of a money order made payable to the JATC. No other form(s) of payment will be accepted and no exceptions will be made. This Testing Fee will be waived for those individuals on public assistance. Proof of public assistance must be provided prior to testing. In addition, the fee will be waived for those applicants from: Helmets-To-Hard Hats, Non-Traditional Employment for Women, Construction Skills 2000, Access for Women, NAACP Special Employment Services Division, New York City Housing Authority's Resident Employment Services Department, the Consortium for Worker Education and other Minority and/or Women's Special Employment Services' Organizations approved and accepted by the JATC.

The Committee requires that applicants:

* Must be at least 18 years old by no later than March 1, 2010.

* Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D) by no later than March 1, 2010.

* Must be capable of performing the physical requirements of the trade which includes, but not limited to: lifting, climbing, working from heights, working with electrical, mechanical and hydraulic equipment and/or rotating machinery, as determined by the applicant's statement and a medical evaluation and screening paid by the sponsor.

* Must pass a drug test/controlled substance screening-conducted "post employment" and is paid for by the sponsor.

* Must be a legal resident of the Tri-State, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut Metropolitan area for at least one-year prior to submitting their application.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
