ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (09/12/2012)(readMedia)-- Visiting Artist James Fuhrman exhibits his sculpture in the College's Lyet Gallery through Nov. 21. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

An opening reception for the exhibit takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in Hess Gallery, in Zug Memorial Hall. Regular gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Fuhrman's art embodies the warmth and ancientness of cedar and a connection to the earth. He often uses the impact of large scale and the emotion of gestural lines. His natural sculpture placements have been compared to Zen rock gardens such as Ryoan-ji and the Japanese concept of 'ma' space.

Fuhrman says in an artist's statement that he considers artists to be philosophers; therefore, his work focuses on embracing resonance and allowing observers to explore different ideas. Through use of his glass studio in the woods, Fuhrman has been able to deeply enhance his sense of natural time and changes, connecting to the earth and animals. In his work, he strives to put humans as an equal element of the earth, not the all-powerful controllers. His sensitivity to subtle details can be attributed to his self-proclaimed title of "accidental Buddhist."
