Elizabethtown College announces appointment of David S. Brown to Raffensperger Professor of History

Four newly tenured and promoted faculty members recognized August 28 during opening semester Convocation

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (08/31/2012)(readMedia)-- Elizabethtown College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. David S. Brown as the Horace E. Raffensperger Professor of History. An endowed chair, the professorship was established in 1980 with a generous gift from Horace E. Raffensperger's wife Elizabeth and their son, Daniel. Candidates for the professorship are reviewed by a faculty peer committee, which considers their quality of scholarly work, teaching and service to the College. The Board of Trustees approved the three-year position in 2012. The position may be renewed again in 2015.

Brown earned his bachelor's degree from Wright State University (Ohio), his master's degree from the University of Akron and his doctoral degree from the University of Toledo. His professional experience includes teaching at Elizabethtown College since 1997, as well as faculty roles at the University of Toledo, Washtenaw Community College (Michigan) and Saginaw Valley State University.

A prolific presenter and writer, Brown has authored three books, one of which-a biography of Richard Hofstadter-has been nominated by the University of Chicago Press for a Pulitzer Prize. He currently is working on two additional books; one focusing on liberal conservatism in American life and the other titled, "F. Scott Fitzgerald-Paradise Lost." The position was previously held, since 1989, by Professor of Humanities Emeritus Paul Gottfried.

Four newly tenured and promoted faculty members were recognized Aug. 28, 2012, during Convocation at Elizabethtown College. Both honors represent an important milestone for a college professor. His or her scholarly work, teaching and service to the College and the community over several years are reviewed by a faculty peer committee, the provost, the president and the Board of Trustees. A favorable decision on tenure means the College wants the faculty member to become a permanent member of the scholarly community.

Dr. Conrad Kanagy, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, was promoted from associate professor to professor.

Dr. Jeffery Long, Department of Religious Studies, was promoted from associate professor to professor.

Dr. Charla Lorenzen, Department of Modern Languages, was granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor to associate professor.

Dr. Gabriela Sanchis, Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, was promoted from associate professor to professor.
