Erin Harman Receives Philip C. and Karen Ashkar Murley '63 Scholarship
MILLERSVILLE, PA (06/03/2014)(readMedia)-- Erin Harman, Hanover, Pa., has been selected to receive the Philip C. and Karen Ashkar Murley '63 Scholarship. Harman will graduate from South Western High School and will attend Millersville University of Pennsylvania this fall to study mathematics.
The scholarship was established by Karen Murley, '63 in honor of her deceased husband Philip, a long-time IBM employee. It is awarded to an incoming freshman who selected a mathematics or physics major, based on their strong academic record and leadership potential. It is an award of $887 per year for each of the recipient's first two years of enrollment.
Harman pursued a typical college preparatory schedule that included honors-level algebra II, geometry and pre-calculus, as well as Advanced Placement level statistics and calculus. She was on the distinguished honor roll throughout high school and a member of the National Honor Society in grades eleven and twelve.
In addition to her academic successes, Harman is a multiple sport athlete, competing in school volleyball, the track and field team and club volleyball during all four years of high school. Her volleyball team was the winner of the York-Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association championship this year. Harman was on the All-State Volleyball Team this year and for the past two years was selected to be on the All-District Volleyball Team. She was a district qualifier for both volleyball and track in grades 11 and 12, as well as a state qualifier for track in grade 11. In 12th grade she was honored as a WGAL Athlete of the Week. She was active in her church youth group throughout high school.
